This course gives an overview of the development of human civilization from early beginnings to the early modern period. Students will examine the civilizations of ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, India and China, as well as classical Greece and Rome. Further, students will look at Medieval world history from the Byzantine Empire to the Renaissance. The major focus is to examine and thereby understand the foundation of western civilization, while a key theme is to understand how historical events continue to influence today’s world. This course will examine major themes in ancient history and the use of research and inquiry skills of the historian.
